I hope everyone will take a moment to read this and deeply study the situation. Everything we hold sacred is on the line...
Californian's will be voting in November on a bill that would define marriage. Now, most of us know that whatever California does, it won't be too long until the rest of the United States will follow. If the bill passes, the California State constitution would state "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California." If it does not pass, however, marriage would have no definition. Why is this harmful you ask, especially to Latter Day Saints?
1-Children in public schools will have to be taught that same-sex marriage is just as good as traditional marriage.
2-Churches may be sued over their tax exempt status if they refuse to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies in their religious buildings open to the public.
3-Religious adoption agencies will be challenged by government agencies to give up their long-held right to place children only in homes with both a mother and a father.
4-Religions that sponsor private schools with married student housing may be required to provide housing for same-sex couples, even if counter to church doctrine, or risk lawsuits over tax exemptions and related benefits.
5-Ministers who preach against same-sex marriages may be sued for hate speech and risk government fines. It already happened in Canada, a country that legalized gay marriage.
6-It will cost you money. This change in the definition of marriage will bring a cascade of lawsuits, including some already lost (e.g., photographers cannot now refuse to photograph gay marriages; doctors cannot now refuse to perform artificial insemination of gays even given other willing doctors).
Right now this only applies to California. But if it does not pass, the rest of us will have to make these same life-changing decisions. I am in no way saying that people who choose to have same-sex partners are horrible people or that we "hate" them. I have friends who have chosen this lifestyle and continue to be friends with them. But I deeply know that the Lord does not sustain this idea.
In fact, in Genesis 19 it speaks of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The last straw for God is found in verse 5- "And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them". ‘Know’ is used both in Hebrew and English in this kind of context as a euphemism in place of a sexual word.
Please take time to study, ponder and pray on the issue. Involve your friends in California. Pray that their hearts might be softened!
