One thing I love about having young kids is that we don't have school schedules we have to work around, and we can pick up and leave whenever we want! We're only 6 hours away from Mount Rushmore and we're pretty sure we'll never live any closer than we are now so we thought why not seize the moment!
We invited Cory's parents to come with us as a late birthday present to his mom who has always wanted to go. It was also super nice to have someone to sit by each of the kids during the drive, and it was actually a pleasant drive!
Listening to "Hey Soul Sister"- his favorite song!
Most of us got good naps even!
Probably because this was what the drive looked like :)
After we pulled in we headed straight to the pool! It was relaxing, with huge windows looking straight out at a beautiful, rocky hill.
Swimming made us work up an appetite so we walked around town for a bit, pausing at this decorated buffalo, and went to dinner.
We had heard that the monument at night was spectacular and drove the little drive to get there for the program. We missed the first part of the program, which highlights each of the presidents pictured, and then while singing "God Bless America" they slowly light the faces. It was pretty neat, but I'm surprised the lighting wasn't better. Still beautiful nonetheless!
The kids got to bed late, and got up early so had an early start! To me, the monument is more beautiful during the day!

Walking down to the sculptor's studio, having a dandy time pulling my hair.
This is a sculpture of what was supposed to originally be carved, but the rock didn't allow for more details. Pretty cool though, eh?
There was a path to walk right under the faces, and we took the paved part to see right up their nostrils. Awesome!
Checking things out with his new, sweet binoculars. He still carries them around his neck!
To let the kids nap, we drove around a scenic loop and it was breathtaking. Everyone probably got sick of my saying "Oh my gosh, this is beautiful! Look at that, how gorgeous!" over and over and over....I wish I had gotten more pictures of the beautiful fall leaves, the rocks sticking up in the middle of the forest, and tunnels in the rock framing Mt. Rushmore.
Even though it was just a quick two day trip, I wouldn't have changed a thing and would tell anyone to go in the fall because it really is lovely!

It really is incredible! I went once when I was little but don't remember it at all. Great pictures!
Thats awesome. When we took the scenic route there was nothing out but the scences. Whis I knew you were going and would have suggested taking the littles to Bear country which is 5 miles down the road from Rushmore. It is grea though isn't it.
Looks like a really fun trip. That's somewhere we want to visit someday!
